Mother
by Linda McRae
“Happy Mother’s Day”
means more
Than have a happy day.
It means I love you, first of all,
Then, thanks for all you do and say.
Thinking of your happiness on this, your day,
I struggle for the words to say,
What rests so deeply in my heart and
How fortunate I feel to have been born to you.
Mother, your love is like the rush of life,
A bubbling, laughing spring
That brightens me with your light
So that I, too, can hear the birds sing.
You are beautiful, young at heart,
Playful as a kid, yet wise
As one who has lived long--
Whose spirit is peaceful and calm.
Your life is devoted to your children and their children,
Days filled with everyday tasks,
Love freely given, and a hard fight to make
A marriage work that wasn’t right.
Mother, did you have dreams,
That were scattered to the wind --
Never doubt that fortune smiles on you,
The love of your children’s children is yours.
There are those whose lives are shaped by love;
Whose pleasures, rich and full, are found in giving;
Who make hearts bloom, and add gold to the day,
You’re the place within my heart that’s home, Jac.
You’re my mother and my friend,
I turn and you are there,
I speak and you understand,
--- I feel cared for.
So, Mother, close your eyes and make a wish, and
I hope that no gift more happiness can bring than this:
Mother, I love you for all that you are and do.
I kiss you and hug you with love and gratitude.
