A Single Mother's Creed
by Michelle R. Lewandowski

Today I woke up, and got both my daughter and myself ready...
Today I laced up my daughter's pink Sketcher tennis shoes...
Today I laced up my combat boots...
Today I drove my daughter to school, and myself to work...
Today I served my country...
Today I picked my daughter up from school...
Today I cooked, cleaned, made dinner, and did the dishes...
Today I did laundry, filled with soiled clothes from daycare and my battle dress uniform...
Today I taught my daughter to love nature, as we planted flower seeds in our garden...
Tonight I taught my daughter to love literature as I read her a book...
Tonight I taught my daughter to love laughter as we splashed in the bathtub...
Tonight I taught my daughter to love music, as I sang her to sleep...
Although I was exhausted, as I find myself at the end of most days,
I found peace in the warmth of my daughters breath on my neck as she slept...
Tonight I found strength from within, although the past has been tough, and the future is uncertain.
I am a strong, single Mother, serving in the military, and I can accomplish anything!
