Sand
Castle
skill level: easy
cost: $5-$20
craft time: 1 hour
1 cup clean sand
1/2 cup cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon alum (in spice section of your grocery store)
1/2 cup water
seashells, coral, small pieces of driftwood (maybe a plastic knight on
a steed?)
Place sand into an old cooking pot.
Add cornstarch, water and alum; stir.
Place pot over a medium heat, stirring frequently.
As the mixture warms it will start to liquefy, then it will get thicker
(2-3 minutes).
As it thickens it will clump and begin to make a "stiff dough".
Remove from the heat; continue to stir to cool the mixture down.
Remove dough to a wooden board, spread it out to help it cool.
When cool enough to handle, begin to mold your creation.
Tip for your castle: Do not make a huge castle, it will be fragile.
Glue the shells and other goodies about the castle.
Let dry for a few days.
