Seijin no Hi
by W.Holidays
The Coming of
Age Festival is a national holiday in Japan. It is celebrated on
the second Monday in January (it used to be on January 15th until
1999). All people who turn twenty years old are honored.
Coming of Age ceremonies have been held for centuries in Japan.
During the Edo period (1603-1868) boys attained adult status at 15 and
girls at 13. In 1876, the Japanese government declared the legal
age of adulthood to be 20. Twenty is the age when youths are
allowed to legally vote, drink, and smoke.
The people turning 20 usually dress up. Young men wear suits and
young ladies wear a traditional furisode, a special type of kimono with
longer sleeves and detailed designs. |
