Hinduism
originated in the Indus Valley around about 2500 to 1500 B.C. It
is the oldest major religion and the worlds third largest in terms of
practitioners. Hinduism sprang from the merging of the local
population and the invading Aryans. The chief divinities are
Vishnu and Shiva.
Dharma refers to the the appropriate Hindu behavior and the path to
rebirth. Their karma, their deeds, will determine their cycle of
rebirth. Chanting mantras and offering gifts is believe to
summons gods. Hindus often go on pilgrimages to sacred
sites.
Approximately one billion people in India are Hindu and there are about 30 million in the Hindu diaspora.
