Fish & Flowers Centerpiece
by W.HolidaysFish & Flowers Centerpiece

skill level: easiest
cost: $5-$20
craft time: 30 minutes

I saw this at my doctor's office, it was really cool.
UPDATE: Look for the Vase Aquatic Garden at your local craft store.

a large, clear glass vase with a neck
plastic saucer that fits into the neck of the vase
scissors
glass marbles or rocks
bottled water
small (6-inch) water loving plant (peace lily or dieffenbachia) just ask your local nursery for ideas)
ribbon
peacock feather, optional
betta fish (ak Siamese Fighting Fish), just one they don't like other fish or lots of tiny neon or goldfish
fish food

Rinse off all materials first (expect the ribbon, feather and the fish of course).
Remove the pant form the pot and gently rinse away all the dirt with warm water. Take your link you want to get rid of all the dirt! The roots don't need dirt and won't harm the fish.
Trim the roots if necessary.
Cut a small hole into the bottom of the plastic saucer (the roots will go through there).
Place some of the marbles in the bottom of the vase.
Add water to vase leave about an inch of air space between the water and the saucer (the fish will need this air).
Add your fish.
Gently work the roots of the plant though the saucer then set in into the neck of the vase.
Fill the sauce with some marbles.
Tie with ribbon and add a few peacock feathers for pizzazz!
Feed and change water as recommend by the pet store.

Don't place in direct sunlight you'll boil the fish, don't place in a drafty or cold pace either.  Neither the plant nor fish will like that.

Fish Tips: Change about a fourth of the water once a week. Use bottle water. Check with the pet store if your fish need special conditioners in the water (if so it is usually a few drops and not very expensive). Ask them about the food needed and how often to feed your new fish.

Getting a Beta Fish/Siamese Fighting Fish?

"Bettas are unique in that they breathe air from the water's surface, and do not pull oxygen from the water like most fish. They can live in the tiny "betta bowls" they are displayed in, although water changes will have to be made at least every other day. They will be easier to keep in a slightly larger tank, 2 gallons or more, then you can perform water changes 1-2 times a week." [1]
