Guy Fawkes Day
by W.Holidays
Guy Fawkes Day is celebrated in England. In 1605, Guy Fawkes attempted and failed to blow
up the Houses of Parliament. He was caught, hung, drawn and quartered on
November 5th. A year later Parliament declared November 5th a day of public thanksgiving.
Many of the traditions and customs of Halloween have shifted over to Guy
Fawkes Day. Prior to the celebration, children make effigies of Guy Fawkes.
Children then go door to door with these effigies begging for "a penny for the
Guy".
November 4th is known as Mischief Night and November 5th is known as Guy Fawkes
Night and/or Bonfire Night. It is on Guy Fawkes Night that the effigies are lit
on fire and blaze atop a bonfire (like the huge bonfires of Samhain). Children
also play pranks on others just like on Halloween.
