Nicola
by W.Holidays
May

St. Nicholas is the Patron
Saint of Bari, Italy. He is the Bishop of Myra and was the
object of an intense and particular veneration. The feast of St.
Nicholas lasts for three days and commemorates the arrival of his bones
in Bari. They got to Bari in 1087 when three boats with 62
sailors from Bari stole the remains of St. Nicholas from Mira and
brought them to Bari. They arrived on May 9th. The
celebrations begin on May 7th with a procession of people wearing
period costumes from the port of San Giorgio to the town square in
front of the Basilica. On May 8th the statue of the Saint is
taken out into the sea which is followed by a procession of
boats. In the evening the statue returns to dry land under a
brilliant display of fireworks. The feast is concluded on May 9th
with more celebrations.
