Ching Ming Festival
April 5 Also
known as the Qingming Festival, Clear Brightness Festival, Festival for
Tending Graves, Grave Sweeping Day, Chinese Memorial Day, Tomb Sweeping
Day, Spring Remembrance, and All Souls Day (not to be confused with the
Roman Catholic holiday of the same name).
Ching Ming normally
falls on the 5th of April, 105 days after previous year's winter
solstice or or the 15th day from the Spring Equinox. It is a
public holiday in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.
On
Ching Ming, the entire family visits their ancestors graves. The
grave site is cleared of weeds and sweep clean. Joss sticks (a
type of incense) and paper offerings are burnt at the grave
sites. Flowers, particularly chrysanthemums are also brought to
the cemeteries. Roasted suckling pig, tea, wine and other foods
are offered to the ancestors during the ceremony, then eaten by the
family.
Some people carry willow branches or hang them on their
front doors. It's believed willow branches ward off the evil
ghosts that wander about Ching Ming.
People also celebrate by
going on family outings an preparing the soil for planting crops
It is also popular to fly kites in the shapes of animals.
