St. Sebastian Day
by W.Holidays
January 20
Patron saint of archers, athletes, and soldiers, and is appealed to for protection against plagues.
Sebastian is thought to have been born in Narbonne, Gaul. Around 283,
he became a soldier in the Roman army and encouraged Marcellian and
Marcus to remain firm in their faith, even under sentence of death.
Sebastian is responsible for converting many people to
Christianity. He is also known for healing. Is is said to
have healed Nicostratus, The Master of the Rolls; his wife, Zoe, a deaf
mute whom he cured; Claudius, the jailer; Chromatius, the Prefect of
Rome, whom he cured of gout; Chromatius' son, Tiburtius.
Chromatius then set the prisoners free, freed his slaves, and resigned
as prefect.
Sebastian then became a captain of the guards. Neither Emperor
Diocletian or Emperor Maximian were aware that Sebastian was Christian.
During the persecution of the Christians by Maximian, it
was discovered that Sebastian was a Christian. He was executed
and shot with arrows. He was left for dead, but the widow of St.
Castulus found him still alive and nursed him back to health.
Once recovered, Sebastian intercepted the Emperor and denounced him for
his cruelty to Christians. Sebastian was beaten to death on the
Emperor's orders.
