Winnie the Pooh Day
by W.Holidays
January 18
During World War I, troops in transit to eastern Canada stopped at
White River, Ontario. Lieutenant Harry Colebourn purchase a small
female black bear cub from a hunter who had killed its mother. He named
her Winnipeg, after his hometown, Winnie for short. Colebourn
gave the bear to the zoo.
This bear was Christopher Robin's (son of author A.A. Milne) favorite
zoo animal and inspired young Christopher to name his own teddy bear
Winnie, Winnie the Pooh. A.A. Milne wrote about Pooh,
Christopher, and their friends in the 100-Acre-Wood.
Pooh is beloved by so many and so today we celebrate him.
How to celebrate:
Read House of Pooh Corner
Have a smackerel of snacks like carrots and honey cakes.
